Bans Off Miami: RISE UP!
Date and time
RISE UP MIAMI! Abortion is healthcare! We won’t go back!
About this event
WHAT - RISE UP MIAMI! Meet us at the torch of friendship at Bayfront Park and then march around Biscayne Blvd. We expect news media to be present for our demonstration.
- PLEASE WEAR GREEN & BRING YOUR MOST CREATIVE SIGNS!
- If you plan to march with us we advise comfy shoes
- Other helpful things to bring: water, a mask for when social distancing is not possible, an energy snack if you might need it, and bug spray for anyone with sensitivity to mosquitos or no-see-ums.
- Please use the restrooms before you leave for the protest as we are uncertain what facilities will be available in the immediate vicinity. In case of emergency, we do know that Bayfront Marketplace has public restrooms, but it will be about a 5-10 minute walk from where we are to gather.
WHERE/WHEN - Saturday July 16th at 7 pm - Bayfront Park, 301 Biscayne Boulevard
Miami, FL 33132
- Please note the map which outlines parking, our meeting point, restrooms, and the march route on our Link Tree at www.Linktr.ee/BansOff305.
- We have set up a Carpool Chat via WhatsApp for anyone who wishes to give or catch a ride to the rally. Use this link to join: https://chat.whatsapp.com/Jrp3ZPdChUQHuz89hAieoK
- Accessibility has also been prioritized for this event. If you need assistance please email katforflorida@gmail.com
- Bayfront park is easily accessible via the Metrorail and Metromover. We suggest taking the train if possible, since it will reduce congestion at the site.
HOW - Safety is also a top priority for this event. With that in mind we have several safety measures in place, including the attendance of members of the Miami Street Medicine team and legal observers. If you are new to protesting or want to brush up on your situational awareness skills please take a look at these slides: http://bit.ly/ddsafteytraining
Additionally we have consulted with an ACLU attorney regarding HB1. Here are some things to consider:
- As long as we are peacefully exercising our 1st Amendment Rights to free speech and complying with law enforcement, we will be within our constitutional right to protest.
- Do not bring any kind of weapon (or something that could be viewed as a weapon, pocket knife, etc.), stay out of streets and roadways (consistent with your permit), don’t touch, tamper with, or destroy any public property, stay away from, and be deferential to, any police action.
- Do not engage with, and report, any counter-demonstrators. We will have legal observers on site and volunteers wearing a sash that says "VOLUNTEER" which you can notify in case you see any counter-demonstrators. So far in our Miami efforts counter-protesters have not been an issue, but we are sharing this information just in case.
- Should there be any police action, videoing can often be a problem. You can technically video, but you can not do so close enough to interfere in any way with the police action. 30 feet might be a safe distance. If a person is confronted by a Law Enforcement Officer and told to move or surrender your phone, the choice not to do so may be an arrestable offense. Better to suggest an alternative (I’ll move and stop videoing), or if an officer insists on taking the phone, get name, badge number, receipt, location where to retrieve, etc., as opposed to obstructing the police action.
