Established as Loyola College in Maryland by John Early and eight other members of the Society of Jesus in 1852, it is one of 28 member institutions of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, the ninth-oldest Jesuit college in the United States, and the first college in the United States to bear the name of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus.  A signature component of Loyola’s 2008-15 strategic plan, Messina supports and enhances a vibrant campus climate that engages first-year students, faculty, administrators, and the broader community in distinct and meaningful ways, including an emphasis on reflection and discernment, critical thinking, inclusive community building and integrated learning.
