Baltimore+Rotterdam: Designing Cities
Each week this spring, two design groups, one from Baltimore (Maryland, USA) and one from Rotterdam (the Netherlands), pair up to discuss architecture, urban design, and how design and policy can improve the built environment for all residents. (More information about this conversation series)

About the speakers
Taejun Kim Hord Coplan Macht (HCM)
Taejun is a senior associate and one of the lead designers for HCM. He has over 10 years of experience in higher education, healthcare, offices, mixed-use, multi-family, retail, and most recently senior living and affordable housing. Taejun approaches each project differently based on the challenges of each project, and he is hands-on from the concept design to construction administration for a building design as he believes concept never realized properly without complementing details. A registered architect in Maryland, member of the AIA. He is also a frequent guest critic and former adjunct faculty member at the Morgan State University Graduate School of Architecture.
Maarten van Bremen GROUP A Architects
Maarten van Bremen is Founding partner at GROUP A. Graduated from TU Delft, Maarten van Bremen founded GROUP A in 1996 together with Folkert van Hagen and Adam Visser. He is an expert in the field of reuse and renovation focusing on early modern architecture and monuments. His award-winning work comprises the renovation of the brutalist subway stations of the Metro Oostlijn Amsterdam, the renovation of the nautic monumental office Damen Shipyard in Vlissingen, and the transformation of a former 14.500 sqm warehouse in Rotterdam’s harbor district into an activity-based building offering space to sustainably create, produce, and meet. These projects have been awarded the NRP Gulden Feniks, Frame Award and Dutch Daylight Award. GROUP A's work has been exhibited at Design Museum in London, Cultural Capital Porto and ARCAM in Amsterdam, among others.
Chris van Langen Program Manager for Spatial Design Action, Creative Industries Fund NL
Chris van Langen is programme leader at the Creative Industries Fund NL. He graduated in 1989 from the Faculty of Architecture of Eindhoven University of Technology (Architectural History and Theory and Architectural Urban Design). After his studies, he started in 1990 at the Urban Planning and Housing Department of the Municipality of Rotterdam. There he worked as urban designer and as the coordinator of the internal discussion platform of the department. He also was a member of the Urban Planning Staff of the department for two years. In May 2005 Chris started working for the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and Urban Design (RAvB). Initially as coordinator of Urban Design and graduation coordinator, and from August 2008 to October 2021 as head of the school.
