June 4, 2016, Tony Williams Ballet (TWB) brings a vibrant and cutting edge collection of ballet to the main stage of Boston’s Strand Theatre. The TWB was founded by local dance pioneer, Tony Williams who worked his way up from corps-de-ballet to become a principal dancer with the Boston Ballet. His career as a principal dancer continued with Joffrey Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, the National Ballet of Portugal, and the Norwegian National Ballet. He returned to his native Jamaica Plain to open a dance school and produce the popular Urban Nutcracker. In 2015, he founded the Tony Williams Ballet - a racially diverse company that is reflective of the changing diversity of Boston - will offer innovative and entertaining works with live music whenever possible.
“We are thrilled to be back at the Strand Theatre” said Tony Williams, Artistic Director of TWB . “I have a great history with the venue. We have dancers of tremendous ability coming from diverse backgrounds and I am proud to present to them a stage worthy of their undoubted talents.” The mixed - bill program is great for the entire family. The program features Tony Williams production of Ben’s Trumpet, based upon the award-winning children’s book by Rachel Isadora. The ballet is a poignant story of a boy’s love of 1930’s & 40’s jazz music told with vibrant dancing. The program includes Glinka Pas de Trois a rarely seen gem by George Balanchine, staged by Marina Eglevsky; a suite of dances by the legendary Isadora Duncan, staged by Ellen O’Reilly, and Carnival of the Animals, originally choreographed by Samuel Kurkjian with new choreography by Tony Williams and Gianni DiMarco.
Our show is held at the Strand Theater, 543 Columbia Rd, Dorchester, MA 02125.
