Bad Times Disco presents: Migrant Women Rise (Screening & Mutual Aid Event)

Bad Times Disco presents a mutual aid fundraiser & screening of “Migrant Women Rise: Stories of Red-Tagged Overseas Filipino Workers”, a documentary film by Carl Catedral. Shot during the COVID-19 pandemic, the documentary follows the lives of two migrant domestic worker-leaders in Hong Kong who mobilize fellow migrants - despite being red-tagged by the Filipino government. The screening is also a mutual aid fundraiser - proceeds will go to The Hong Kong chapter of GABRIELA, the progressive grassroots-based alliance of more than 200 women’s organizations worldwide. Founded in 1984, GABRIELA organizes Filipino women, primarily from marginalized sectors of society, and helps educate and empower them through collective action.

Carl Catedral is a Filipino-American filmmaker and theology student based in Hong Kong. Carl also writes about the filmmaking process and theologies of migration, lament, and the Filipino diaspora in his newsletter, Impermanent Residence. Bad Times Disco is a pop-up record store and party based in Hong Kong. It is also a community-based project dedicated to mutual aid, collectivism, and the cultural strategy of music for social change.

Join us for the screening and a discussion session with the filmmaker and migrant leaders on 16th December, from 7:00PM - 9:00PM at Music Room, Terrible Baby, 4th Floor, Eaton HK, Jordan. An after party featuring Bad Times Disco DJs will follow, from 9:00PM - 12:00AM. Tickets are on a sliding scale for greater accessibility - Standard Price tickets are HK$250 (plus processing fees).
