Event description

Description

Eddy Portnoy, Ph.D., will be discussing his new book, "Bad Rabbi, and Other Strange but True Stories from the Yiddish Press," at Temple Israel of Lawrence, 140 Central Avenue, Lawrence, N.Y., on Wednesday, January 17, 2018, starting at 7:30 p.m. The book exposes the seamy underbelly of pre-WW II New York and Warsaw, the two major centers of Yiddish culture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Eddy Portnoy introduces us to the Jews whose follies and foibles were fodder for urban gossip - such as the 600 + lbs. professional wrestler; the Great Tonsil Riot of 1906; and the Battle at the Bris. One part Isaac Bashevis Singer, one part Jerry Springer, this irreverent, unvarnished and frequently hilarious compendium of stories provides a window into an unknown yiddish world that was.

Light refreshments will be served. Admission is Free. Advance registrations are recommended. Call (516) 239-1140 or email alan@templeisrael-lawrence.org.
