Backyard Skills: Rainwater Harvesting
Saturday, March 9, 2013 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM (PST)
San Juan Capistrano, CA
Get the most out of every drop! Harvesting the rain is a centuries old practice. While the methods of harvesting are more advanced today, the intention is the same, save precious rainwater! In this lecture hosted by Evan Marks, we'll learn all about rainwater harvesting techniques. Understand how easy it is to install and operate a rain barrel plus other ways to harvest the rain passively. Rain barrel and all necessary parts will be available for purchase.
The benefits of harvesting the rain increase with every drop. Just 1” of rain yields 62 gallons/100 sq ft of roof space. When you consider the average roof size for an Orange County home is 3,000 sq ft, that’s a collection of over 1800 gallons/1” of rain! Harvesting the rain protects our watershed and the ocean it connects to by diverting runoff into your barrel instead of the gutter. Use it to water your garden - recharging the aquifer and growing healthy plants. Harvesting and using rainwater reduces your personal energy consumption by 20%. With some knowledge and simple tools, you can become part of the solution by harvesting and reusing rainwater - liquid gold from the sky.
