Event description
Watch“ Backs Against the Wall: The Howard Thurman Story” followed by discussion and multi-art performance.

About this Event

Join in on a documentary film screening of “Backs Against the Wall: The Howard Thurman Story” followed by a riveting discussion and multi-art performance inspired by this influential theologian, poet, mystic, and philosopher of nonviolence.

Howard Thurman, the 20th century’s leading theorist of non-violent social transformation, sought a non-violent revolution that would redefine society in some ways suddenly, and in others gradually. Thurman drew his revolutionary ideas from different religious traditions and experimented with radical new forms of worship aimed at changing the relation between religion and social justice. Honoring that idea, this event will feature readings of Howard Thurman’s poetry, liturgical dance, and youth from the Center for Interfaith Cooperation’s Young Ambassador Program reading selections from Hindu, Buddhist, Quaker, and Catholic thinkers and activists who shaped Thurman’s philosophy.

After the discussion of the film, audience members will be invited to stay and discuss how Thurman’s ideas and experiences can help Indianapolis religious institutions’ work for a more just society.

Walk-ins welcome. RSVPs encouraged by Nov. 5.
