About this event

Backpacking 101

A class designed for the beginner who wants to get outside and enjoy what nature has to offer. We will cover the basics of camping including gear, what to wear, where to camp, bathroom necessities, and basic meal planning. It will also include a discussion of the principles of Leave no Trace.

Exploring the wilderness is a wonderful experience. You are far from the crowds, in a hushed tranquil world. Camping can be spectacular at any time of the year.

This is level 2 of a 5 level series to get you confident outside in any conditions.

Levels:

Level 1 - Camping 101 : A class designed for the beginner who wants to get outside and enjoy what nature has to offer. We will cover the basics of camping including gear, what to wear, where to camp, bathroom necessities, and basic meal planning. It will also include a discussion of the principles of Leave no Trace.

Level 2 - Backpacking (Camping 201): This course is designed for those who wish to take their camping out of the drive-in campsite and into the wild. There will be more in-depth discussions about trip planning, choosing the right gear, map use, and safety. Backpacking 101 students will leave feeling like they can embark on a trip themselves. They should have a little bit of experience sleeping outside.

Level 3 - Camping 301: Now that you are ready to head out on the trail let's get comfortable with navigation. We will help you understand the information that is contained within your map, how to use a compass, and how the two work together. You get time to practice taking a bearing from your surroundings and transferring it to your map.

Level 4 - Extended Backpacking Trip Planning (Camping 401): Your skills are growing and your confidence abounds. Let's put things together so that you can take that long-awaited extended backpacking trek. By the end of this class, you will have not only the skills to plan for a long trek, but we will work in a practical fashion to help you plan the trip you want to take.

Level 5 - International Travel; Expedition Ready (Camping 501): Thinking of climbing Kilimanjaro? The Alps? Central of South America? There is nothing greater than getting to see this amazing world of ours than by foot. This course will cover the aspects of embarking on an international backpacking expedition. Not only will we discuss the logistics that are involved in this type of travel, but we will cover such topics as altitude problems, safety, choosing the right guides and more.

What to Expect:

  1. How to prepare
  2. The gear you need
  3. What to do at camp
  4. What to do when moving around in the outdoors

"I started my gym, Juggernaut Fitness, as a side job to my career in Law Enforcement in 2011 as a way to help fellow officers get in shape and pass their physical fitness tests required for employment. It took off from there. I quit my career in Law Enforcement after receiving an invitation to go to Mt Everest and Lhotse as a member of the American Climber Science Program in 2014. I was chosen for the climbing team to assist with climate change research at the top of the world. After 5 visits to Nepal, I now guide teams on treks and climbs in the Himalaya." - Jake
