This rigorous adventure for the well-seasoned hiker will take us into the backcountry of the mountainous Sonoma Coast as we cross through coastal prairie, redwood forests and oak woodlands, offering panoramic views from its highest peak. Please note that this hike is over 15 miles with an elevation gain of 3,600 feet, from the Jenner Headlands to Pole Mountain and back again, so you must be in very good physical condition to participate.

* This spring’s outings to Pole Mountain are made possible through member support and through a partnership with the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District, whose work is funded by a Sonoma County voter-approved quarter-cent sales tax. The District permanently protects the diverse agricultural, natural resource and scenic open space lands of Sonoma County for future generations.

About the Jenner Headlands Preserve
Located north of the town of Jenner where the Russian River meets the Pacific Ocean, and extending two-and-a-half miles along Highway 1 and inland toward Cazadero, this 5,630-acre coastal treasure has it all -- rich habitat for fish and wildlife, dramatic views, extensive opportunities for future recreation and a spectacular segment of the California Coastal Trail. Acquired by Sonoma Land Trust in 2009, it was transferred as planned to The Wildlands Conservancy in 2013.

About Pole Mountain

The Pole Mountain Preserve is approximately 238 acres, and with an elevation of 2204 feet, contains the highest point in this area of Sonoma’s Coast. Relatively untouched by human activities, it includes open grasslands, mature oak savannah, pockets of redwood/Douglas-fir forests, cool lush riparian areas, and a fascinating natural rock slide.  The highlight of visiting the Pole Mountain Preserve is experiencing spectacular, unobstructed views of the coast and many other areas of Sonoma County, and beyond, from numerous vantage points throughout the Preserve.
