Youth and students (along with their parents or guardian) are invited to join us for our annual Back to School Service and Prayer Ritual for Students. This will be a great sharing and bonding experience for our youth and for the community as well. We will raise and direct our collective energies to empower and encourage our youths for a successful year. The ceremony will include: prayers to affirm mental, spiritual and physical protection; video presentation; candle lighting ceremony; prayer recitation; communal tasting; parents and community words of support and encouragement.

All children and students of ALL ages are welcome. Please be prompt so that everyone can benefit from this ritual/ceremony.

School Supply Giveaway and Donation

In service and support of the students in our community, the Temple of Nyame’s Next Generation Ministry (NGM) and Young Adult Ministries (YAM) invite members and adults in the community to participate in our school supply drive. School supplies will be distributed to students in attendance at the ToN Back to School Ritual on Sunday, August 18, 2019. In the past, we have had over 50 students in attendance. Our goal is for every student in attendance to receive school supplies. With that in mind, we ask you make a monetary donation by August 4, 2019. VIsit templeofnyame.org/backtoschool to make a donation or make a donation from the Eventbrite site.

Back to School Ritual History
In 2009 Orisa Yemoja, one of the deities in the Yoruba pantheon, known as the great mother of all, instructed Iya Mari to conduct a prayer ritual for the students who were returning to school. On August 23, 2009, the Temple of Nyame held its first community wide back to school prayer ritual for students. Every week after that initial ceremony, the name of each youth/student who attended was call and prayed for. A perpetual candlelight was also kept in their honor. That weekly upliftment has become a tradition and continues through today.

Orisa Yemoja, known as the great mother of all, is like Nana Esi Ketiwa in the Akan tradition, Mother Mary of the Christian tradition, Auset of the Kemetic tradition, and other great eternal mothers of mothers. These great mothers traverse cultural limitations (in their many forms) to nurture, protect, and care for others especially children and mothers.
