Event description
Get an insider's view of Conejo Valley history from the region's most famous storyteller, philanthropist and photographer Larry Janss!

About this event

Larry Janss is Conejo Valley to the core.

The respected entrepreneur, philanthropist, photographer and descendant of one of Thousand Oaks' founding families spent his childhood on a 10,000-acre ranch that stretched from the southern ridgeline of the Conejo Valley to the Norwegian grade. Born on the cusp of an era when the valley’s ranching culture was giving way to the post-World War II population boom, Janss saw the barns of his childhood replaced by tract housing and manicured lawns. He remembers his father subdividing the family ranch and then selling the properties to developers for large-scale residential developments like Wildwood and Conejo Oaks.

He has stories to share.

Join CMATO in the galleries for Back on the Ranch with Larry Janss, an illustrated talk that blends local history and personal narrative from Thousand Oaks’ most famous son. Janss will share his adventures growing up during the early days of Thousand Oaks while tracing the evolution of the contemporary Conejo Valley from prehistory, through the Spanish explorations of the 16th and 17th centuries, the creation of the mission system, the Chumash, the ranching of long-horn cattle from the early 19th through the mid 20th centuries, Hollywood movies...and on to the present.

Admission is free for museum members and $15 for non-members.
