[BA Workbench] How to Build Empowering Relationships
Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM (PDT)
About the class
• How much do our friends influence our personalities, emotions and even physical health?
• How can we curate our social influences to empower our own success at work and personally?
• Can we steer clear of the dark side of friendship?
A New England Journal of Medicine study shows that for pairs of people in which each identified the other as a close friend, when one person became obese the other had a 171% greater chance of following suit. Research shows that at times friends can influence us even more than our romantic partners and family. This workshop will discuss what science has to say about the strong influence of friends in all areas our lives. We’ll then apply tools to help you take control of these influences so you can align them to push you towards success. This will be a great course to use in tandem with your existing networking and friend-building skills.
• Welcome (5 min)
• Benefits of friendship (15 min)
• Negative influence of friends (15 min)

• Breakout – realigning your social influences (30 min)
• Session Feedback and Q&A (10 min)
This workshop will start with a PowerPoint presentation of the findings related to the influence of friends, then we’ll move into individual and group work to rethink your own sphere of social influence for maximum empowerment.
