Description

This 1-day Instructor Trainer led course presents principles and application of adult learning theory as applicable for teaching the Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course. This course, revised in 2017, is the first step for individuals who wish to be approved as AWHONN FHM Program Instructors.

About Instructors

Once you have met the criteria for participation, this one-day, in-person course will assist you in becoming an AWHONN Fetal Heart Monitoring Intermediate Course Instructor. This course provides requirements for teaching the Advanced Course. Join the more than 3,000 professionals who have earned this prestigious designation and help other clinicians along their journey of fetal monitoring education.

Criteria for Participation

The minimum requirements for participating in this course include:

  • Licensed Registered Nurse or Licensed Physician
    • Current AWHONN membership
    • Minimum two years recent direct clinical intrapartum experience in fetal monitoring
    • Current direct clinical intrapartum involvement in fetal heart monitoring (FHM) asa staff nurse, physician, manager, clinical nurse specialist, advanced practice registered nurse, certified nurse midwife (registered midwife – Canada) or educator to include responsibilities for direct assessment of clinical FHM skills of others.
    • Maintenance of professional development in intrapartum, antepartum, high risk care and FHM through attendance at relevant continuing education activities.
    • Evidence of successful completion of the current edition Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course within 3 years of Intermediate Instructor Course application with documentation of course validation, including dates and course numbers.

CNE Contact Hours: 8 contact hours of CNE are provided.


A participant who successfully completes the FHM Instructor Course is considered an instructor candidate until evaluated by an instructor trainer or other designated instructor. The evaluation is to occur at the first workshop taught by the instructor candidate. It is the responsibility of the instructor candidate to arrange for an evaluation of the first workshop taught. The evaluator can serve as an additional instructor for the workshop.

Candidates are given two opportunities within one year to pass the Teach-Back before being required to re-take the Instructor Course. If a second Teach-Back is needed, it is preferred, but not required that the second Teach-Back be evaluated by the same evaluator.
