FROM AWARENESS TO ACTION: Behavior Design Training for Environmental Professionals

At Root Solutions, we partner with change-makers to bridge the gap between environmental awareness & action.

We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing conservationists and -policymakers with tools and resources informed by the proven methods of behavioral science, allowing them to create more effective campaigns, policies, and strategies that reflect how people actually make decisions and the factors that motivate behavior that is good for the environment.

If any of these sound like you, we invite you to join us at our practical two-day training that will show you how to use a human-centered design approach to move from analyzing your audience’s barriers to igniting wide-scale environmental behavior change.

Your organization has tried to implement a behavior change campaign in the past, but it wasn’t as effective as you had hoped it would be…

Your organization wants to implement a behavior change campaign, but just doesn’t know where to start…

You’ve never even heard of a “behavior change campaign” or “behavior design” but know that your organization is always seeking ways to make your programs and initiatives more effective…

You’re a student or solo practitioner that just wants to learn more about human behavior, behavioral science, and behavior change for environmental progress.


Initiation & Ideation:

We’ll start by giving you an overview of our environmental human-centered design approach. In the first phase, we’ll teach you how to identify and understand the appropriate audience, select behaviors, determine barriers and motivators to those behaviors.

Behavior Design:

In the second phase, we’ll move into an overview of our ten Behavioral Building Blocks and show you how to use combinations of those building blocks to design effective behavioral interventions.

Examples galore:

Throughout the training, we’ll incorporate real-world examples of behavior design in action, from the environmental field and beyond. We share case studies for each behavioral intervention strategy that we introduce, so that you get a vivid understanding of its real-world potential.

Hands-on application:

Our small group setting of approximately 20 participants also provides you with ample opportunities to participate in hands-on activities to “test-drive” behavior design principles. Through individual and group work, you will have the opportunity to practice applying the concepts to challenges that your own organization may be facing. At the end of the two days, you’ll be equipped with the straightforward tools that you need to implement behavior design in your own work.

What you’ll walk away with:

The knowledge and tools you need to conduct a barriers analysis to reveal your audience’s barriers, beliefs, values, motivations and more!

  • We are giving away our barriers analysis tools so that ANY organization – no matter how small – can complete a low-cost, low-tech, high-impact barriers analysis without the need to hire a statistician!

The ability to segment your audience and communicate more effectively with them.

  • You can’t communicate effectively to your target audience if you don’t understand them. After we help you segment and better understand your audience, we will show you how to use that information to communicate most effectively with them. We will share our own tips as well as other helpful external resources.

The know-how to choose which specific behaviors to target for maximum impact

  • It can be difficult to choose which specific behaviors your organization wants to change through your campaign. Some behaviors are easier to change, but don’t make a huge impact, while others would make a substantial impact, but seem near impossible to change. We’ll share our worksheets and other tips for navigating this complex behavior selection process.

Our Behavioral Building Blocks framework – We’ll give you the background you need to design and execute effective behavior change campaigns

  • Once you’ve selected the behaviors you want to change, it’s time to start the process of planning which behavioral intervention strategies you are going to use to get the behavior change you seek! Our Behavioral Building Blocks framework is based on thousands of research articles, real-world case studies, and years of our own experience. We’ve translated decades of behavioral research into ten easy-to-understand behavioral building blocks. Each building block is made up of time-tested behavioral interventions and only the best, most powerful examples of how each intervention can be applied.

Tools, tools, tools!

  • We’ve mentioned this throughout this page, but it’s worth reiterating: Our mission is for every non-profit to be able to implement effective behavior change campaigns in-house. Success for us would mean that every non-profit can do this work on their own, and would no longer need us to train or consult them! That is why every participant at our training will walk away with tangible, practical, easy-to-use tools (think worksheets, spreadsheets and more).

What's the refund policy?

We will refund the full ticket costs up to 2 weeks before the training. We will offer a 50% refund up to 1 week before the training.

Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?

Yes. Someone else from your organization may attend in your place if you can no longer make it.

What if I don't have a specific behavior change campaign in mind?

That's OK! We will help you figure out what behavior change will have the most impact, as well as how to get there most effectively.
