Join us on April 27 for AWARE 2023: A Conversation with Dr. Roxane Gay about sexual violence, our relationship to our bodies, rape culture, colonialism, and oppression.
Dr. Roxane Gay is known internationally for her no-holds-barred exploration of feminism, rape culture, and social criticism. Notable works include Hunger, Dr. Gay’s autobiography focused on her relationship with her body and experience as a survivor of sexual violence; Bad Feminist, a collection of essays widely considered the quintessential exploration of modern feminism; and Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture, a searing anthology on the realities of rape culture.
Angela Davis is the host of MPR News with Angela Davis, a weekday talk show that airs at 9 am. Davis has more than 25 years of television reporting and anchoring experience and leads conversations on a wide variety of topics including how the state is changing, Minnesota’s persistent racial disparities, economic issues, education, and mental health.
AWARE is the annual fundraising event for the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault during Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

About the organizer
OUR MISSION
The Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault provides leadership and resources for sexual assault programs and allies to prevent sexual violence while promoting a comprehensive, socially just response for all victims/survivors.
OUR WORK
A proven leader in the response to and prevention of sexual violence since 1978, the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault (MNCASA) provides leadership and resources for sexual assault programs and allies to prevent sexual violence while promoting a comprehensive, socially just response for all victims/survivors. MNCASA acts as a catalyst to change society's attitudes toward sexual violence and victims/survivors, and for changing the systems that further victimize those who experience sexual violence. Consistent with current research and best practices, MNCASA’s definition of sexual violence includes a broad spectrum of sexually violent acts; in short, any sexual behavior and activity in which a person is forced, coerced, or manipulated without their consent. This, of course, includes sexual exploitation and sex trafficking. In partnership with victims/survivors, advocates, community programs, and government agencies across the country, MNCASA challenges institutions, practices, and policies that promote systems of oppression.
OUR KEY PROGRAM AREAS
MNCASA provides (1) Victim and Survivor Support by helping partner programs and medical personnel, law enforcement, and legal and social service providers deliver state of the art victim advocacy and support; (2) Prevention Support by developing the capacity of partner programs and others to design and implement effective community-level primary prevention strategies; (3) Policy Reforms through public policy education and advocacy; and (4) Systems Change by developing capacity in medical, criminal justice, social service, and judicial systems to incorporate a coordinated and victim-centered approach into their responses.
