Avoiding Employee Lawsuits
Event Information
Description
Facilitated by a local attorney, this session covers essential strategies to avoid litigation as it pertains to charter school personnel.
Michelle Craig joined Adams and Reese in 2007 and serves on the Labor and Employment team. Her representative clients include schools, fast food companies, offshore companies, home improvement retailers, entrepreneurs and other small businesses.
In addition to her labor and employment experience, Michelle has practiced in the areas of commercial litigation and products liability. She also has represented large companies in claims such as breach of contract, fraud, failure to pay claims or make a tender, negligent misrepresentations and alter ego.
Michelle’s representative matters include:
- Management-side representation in discrimination and harassment claims involving, among other things, age, disability, sex, race, sexual harassment, religion, and national origin.
- Representation of charter schools and higher education institutions in front of administrative agencies, in litigation and governance matters.
- Success at pre-trial resolution of cases, primarily through settlements and summary judgment motions. Significant cases have involved violation of non-competes, restraining orders, wrongful termination claims and violation of anti-discrimination and whistleblower laws.
- Extensive proactive management of employers; preparing policies and procedures, drafting and defending employment documents including severance agreements, confidentiality and non-compete agreements, and non-solicitation agreements for employers. She also writes and provides client and attorney training on a variety of labor and employment issues.
- Conducting HR audits, defending wage and hour investigations and advising employers on the proper classification of employees under FLSA.
Michelle has received several awards for both her legal career and for making an impact in diversity, serving on the Adams and Reese Diversity Committee and actively involved in the firm’s efforts to promote diversity in all practice areas and the legal profession. In 2013, she was named a "Leadership in Law" honoree by CityBusiness, recognizing the top attorneys in New Orleans.
