The GNFAC along with the Friends of GNFAC and MSU Outdoor Recreation are sponsoring this course.
This is a 2 part series. An online classroom portion includes the following topics:
- Intro to Avalanches and Avalanche Terrain Recognition
- Mountain Weather and the development of Seasonal Snowpack
- Decision Making and the Human Factor
- Avalanche Rescue
Field portion information is below. Participants must watch recorded lectures prior to their field session.
There will be a LIVE Question and Answer session December 1st at 7:00pm via ZOOM. Friends of GNFAC will present a summary of each presentation and host a short question and answer session on each topic.
Registration Information
ONE Field Day session is included with each ticket. Select the day you would like to attend your field session and there will be a ticket option for you. If you are interested in the online classroom portion ONLY, select any day and choose 'classroom only'.
Ski Sessions will be hosted at Bridger Bowl (Unless otherwise noted) from 9:15am- 3:00pm.
DEC 3rd, 4th, 9th and 10th sessions are currently SOLD OUT
**Participants in the field course should have basic skiing and snowboarding skills with the appropriate equipment to negotiate “groomed” intermediate ski runs. Please bring skins or snowshoes for uphill travel if you have them. Although not required, an avalanche rescue beacon, shovel, and probe will be very helpful for the field session.
Snowmobile Sessions are back! Sign up through the January event as sled specific field days are held in 2023!

Cost: $40.00 - Proceeds go to the Friends of the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center and includes a BCA Slope Meter and ECT cord.
