Event description
Join us in one of the most iconic mountain destinations in the world – historic Telluride, Colorado – in the heart of The San Juan's.

About this event

We’ll be here at the peak of fall color, but don’t dilly dally because the snow could fly at any moment, turning our pot of leafy gold into a winter wonderland! In fact, it’s very possible that we’ll have a glorious combination of brilliant golden aspen forests and a dusting of snow on the peaks above by this first weekend in October. It’s prime time! AND it’s pure mountain majesty to behold. We’ll be based in the historic town of Telluride, which has one of the highest designations of historic status provided by the U.S. Secretary of The Interior, and a great travel photo location in it’s own right with Victorian gingerbread houses, clapboard storefronts and other historic buildings. On Saturday and Sunday we’ll meander the dirt roads nearby to photograph some of the most spectacular aspen groves, forests of conifer, alpine reflecting lakes and ponds, and even a very cool nearby ghost town. We’ll pass through mountain meadows of sage brush backed by some of the most rugged peaks in the Rockies. This is autumn’s last hurrah and you won’t want to miss it!

Fitness Level: Easy

Most photography will take place within no more than a quarter mile from wherever we stop our cars, and possibly much less. This is primarily a dirt road trip and we’ll carpool our way through some fantastic scenery! Most passenger cars can make it on these dirt roads, but it’s highly suggested to rent a 4WD vehicle if you don’t have one, especially as we make our way to the ghost town. I’ve seen passenger cars on this road, but 4WD is highly recommended. Terrain is typically level and smooth, but there’s a few bumpy spots and small ruts. There are plenty of photographic opportunities within a short distance from the road. We’ll be passing through some camping areas that have restrooms. Whew!

“Easy” means you are able to:

• Stay out for most of the day, driving, walking, and carrying your gear

• Climb several flights of stairs without difficulty

• Walk on uneven ground without assistance

• Walk on wet, slippery surfaces without assistance

• Climb over obstacles (like a log on a trail)

Experience Level:

This workshop is appropriate for all levels of photographers, but beginners and intermediates will find this most helpful. If you are a beginner, I can offer assistance in the field with your camera and composition, and if you are a more experienced photographer and would like to be left alone to do your own thing, I can do that too! Part of the joy of a weekend photography workshop is the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people. Somehow, when you’re with a group, it’s just more fun! That said, we will be spending time on photographic composition and creative Lightroom techniques to assist you in taking home some beautiful photographic art. Be sure and bring your laptop loaded with Lightroom. Regardless of whether you are a beginner or an old pro, it always pays to bring your “beginner mind” to the experience.

Expected Weather Conditions

Expect temperatures in Telluride this time of year to be in the upper 40’s during the day and dipping down as low as in the mid-20’s at night. It’s autumn in the high country! You may need a jacket or heavy sweatshirt during the day and long pants rather than shorts. Dress in layers, bring your jacket, and peel (or add) as necessary.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

• Water and snacks will be provided while we are in the field, and during classroom instruction. It’s recommended that you bring your own reusable water bottle or thermos so that only one large container will need to be used and we can re-fill all water bottles from that. This is more ecofriendly than providing individual plastic water bottles.

• All permits and fees to enter parks and privately-owned facilities, if any.

• Photographic instruction, classroom and in the field.

• Image reviews, group critiques & post-processing instruction.

• Fun! Inspiration! A great time in Telluride!

• The chance to make new friends and influence new people!

WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED:

• Air and ground transportation to and from Denver, Colorado, Montrose, Colorado, or any nearby regional airport.

• Ground Transportation during the workshop – recommend rental of 4WD vehicle – or drive your own - we’ll carpool.

• Lodging – Headquarters for the workshop will be determined ASAP once we know we have enough people signed up to go. We’ll be staying at a hotel in downtown Telluride, as yet TBD. Expect rates in the $300 a night range, +/-. This is high leaf peeping season and the rooms will sell out quickly, so – don’t dilly dally! This is beautiful Western Colorado!

• Meals and restaurant beverages are not included.

• Medical Evacuation & Travel Insurance (optional but recommended – expected cost in the $325 range – available through Allianz, AAA and other companies)

Since we’re working on a short time schedule between now and the workshop date, please be ready to confirm your registration with full payment by August 31, 2021.

ITINERARY:

Friday, October 1, 2021, 2pm: We’ll begin our workshop in a meeting room or café at about 2pm, (information which will be sent to you after you’ve registered.) Following introductions, we’ll learn about photography basics, composition & mindfulness in the field. Check-in at the hotel is at 4pm, and we’ll plan to meet for a quick meal around 4:30pm. After dinner we’ll head out to photograph the sunset. Sunset is at 6:51 pm. Plan to spend about an hour doing a group sunset shoot from about 6:30pm to 7:30pm.

Saturday, October 2, 2021: Up and at ‘em early to carpool to our sunrise location. We’ll shoot through the sunrise and early morning hours, and then stop for breakfast. After breakfast we’ll get in our vehicles and head south, visiting beautiful scenic locations all the way. Expect this trip to take several hours. We’ll provide makings for a picnic that we’ll have on the road. We’ll be shooting all day and will adjust our shooting techniques to capture the golden leaves as they are backlit by the sun. When we return, we’ll spend some time going over Lightroom techniques for processing, including creating panoramas. After dinner, we’ll head back out to shoot sunset. After this full day, we’ll head back to our rooms for some much-needed rest!
