Event description
What’s not to love about fall in Western Colorado? By this time of the year, the temperatures are beginning to cool down, the mornings and

About this event

... evenings are bit crisper, and the color up on the high mesas is spectacular! There are certain locations on this side of the divide that are famous for their fall colors, but Pinyon Mesa is what I would call a hidden gem. This weekend is really the sweet spot for fall color in Colorado, so it’s the best time to hit the road to capture that glorious gold! We’ll take the dirt roads to find some of the most beautiful stands of aspen trees anywhere in the state. This is also the closest weekend to the full moon, so we’ll practice our camera settings to get some amazingly detailed pictures of the man in the moon rising over the trees of gold right after sunset. We may do some work on creating panoramas as well. I’ll run this workshop like I do when I’m out shooting on my own, and we’ll spend the better part of the day on Saturday following the trail of gold to see what pops out at us and stopping as we feel the pull of the beauty. This weekend we’ll also be visiting some great locations closer to town at sunrise and sunset.

Fitness Level: Easy

Most photography will take place within no more than a half mile from wherever we stop our cars, and possibly much less. This is primarily a dirt road trip via 4WD and we’ll carpool our way through some fantastic scenery! Most passenger cars can make it on these flat dirt roads, but if you prefer to rent a 4WD, that’s what I would suggest if you have any concerns about what your vehicle can do. Terrain is typically level and smooth. We’ll visit a couple of parks and lakes that are off the beaten path, but they don’t require hiking ability or high clearance 4WD. There are plenty of photographic opportunities within a short distance from the road. We’ll be passing through some parks and camping areas that have restrooms. Whew!

“Easy” means you are able to:

• Stay out for most of the day, driving, walking, and carrying your gear

• Climb several flights of stairs without difficulty

• Walk on uneven ground without assistance

• Walk on wet, slippery surfaces without assistance

• Climb over obstacles (like a log on a trail)

Experience Level:

This workshop is appropriate for all levels of photographers. If you are a beginner, I can offer assistance in the field with your camera and composition, and if you are a more experienced photographer and would like to be left alone to do your own thing, I can do that too! Part of the joy of a weekend photography workshop is the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people. That said, we will be spending time on photographic composition and creative Lightroom techniques to assist you in taking home some beautiful photographic art. Regardless of whether you are a beginner or an old pro, it always pays to bring your “beginner mind” to the experience. Allow the beauty of nature to spark your wonder!

Expected Weather Conditions

Temperatures on the mesa this time of year are usually warm and sunny with highs in the upper 70’s. Expect the temps to drop into the upper 40’s overnight. You may need a light jacket, sweatshirt or windbreaker for our early morning and evening shoots. Dress in layers, bring your jacket, and peel as necessary.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

• Water and snacks will be provided while we are in the field, and during classroom instruction. It’s recommended that you bring your own reusable water bottle or thermos so that only one large container will need to be purchased and we can re-fill all water bottles from that. This is more ecofriendly than providing individual plastic water bottles.

• All permits and fees to enter parks and privately-owned facilities, if any.

• Photographic instruction, classroom and in the field.

• Image reviews, group critiques & post-processing instruction.

• Fun! Inspiration! A great time on Pinyon Mesa!

• The chance to make new friends and influence new people!

WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED:

• Air and ground transportation to and from Denver, Colorado, Grand Junction, or any nearby regional airport.

• Ground Transportation during the workshop – recommend car rental – or drive your own vehicle - we’ll carpool. It’s ok for a passenger car if the roads are dry.

• Lodging – Headquarters for the workshop will be determined ASAP once we know we have enough people signed up to go. We’ll be staying at a hotel in downtown Grand Junction, as yet TBD. Expect rates about $125 a night. If you’re staying too far away, and it’s difficult to make it to our early morning sunrise photography sessions, we will have to leave without you to make the sunrise. If this happens, you can call me to find out where we are, (if there is cell coverage) or you can do something on your own that morning. You’ll still have fun – Hey! You’re in beautiful Western Colorado! But you’ll be doing something different than we are.

• Meals and restaurant beverages are not included.

• Medical Evacuation & Travel Insurance (optional but recommended – expected cost in the $325 range – available through Allianz, AAA and other companies)

After dinner we’ll head out to photograph the sunset. Sunset is at 7:17pm. Plan to spend about an hour doing a group sunset shoot.

Saturday, September 18, 2021: Up and at ‘em early to get to our sunrise location. We’ll shoot through the sunrise and early morning hours, and then have breakfast. After breakfast we’ll get in our vehicles and head over Pinyon Mesa, visiting beautiful scenic locations all the way. Expect this trip to take a few hours. We’ll provide makings for a picnic that we’ll eat while on the road. We’ll be shooting all day and will adjust our shooting techniques to capture the golden leaves as they are backlit by the sun. When we return, we’ll spend some time going over Lightroom techniques for processing. After dinner, we’ll head back out to shoot sunset and the nearly full moon!
