Autonomy Music Business Classes: Week 1 A&R (Artists and Repertoire)
Saturday, June 1, 2013 from 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM (EDT)
New York, NY
Comprehensive music business and production classes moderated by Gold and Platinum Record Producer/former EMI-Blue Note Label Group A&R Head and NYC session guitarist, John McCracken. This is an eight week course, meeting once a week for eight weeks. It is designed as both an in-depth analysis of the music business by category (see below) and as a networking vehicle for amateurs and pros alike to meet and connect with high level major label and indy A&R, SVP's of music publishing, label heads, world class engineers and producers, managers, etc. in a pro studio setting.
Each two hour weekly class will have a different industry expert as guest speaker from the disciplines listed below. Classes will be a combination of lectures and discussion followed by question and answer sessions. Each attendee is encouraged to bring samples of his or her work, business cards, press kits, etc. for possible presentation during class and for exchange between other attendees. (Networking among attendees is also highly encouraged.) The goal of these classes is to serve as a platform for musicians and other music industry people looking for better networking solutions and alternatives as well as those looking for current “hands-on” on information they can use to help achieving success.
This is an ala carte course model where you can attend one or any number of classes depending upon your interest and networking needs. You need not attend all classes and if you so choose, only attend one or any combination of classes. These are not sequential so taking them out of order will not impact your ability to accomplish your objectives. Classes are limited to 20 per class and are $75 per person per each two hour class. However, classes are discounted depending upon how many you sign up for. Also, we give an additional discount if you recommend (and they attend) other participants. Discounts TBD. (To be determined.)
Classes will be held once a week at the legendary Premier Studios-723 7th Avenue at 48th Street conveniently located near most subways (1, A, B, C, D, E, F), NJ Transit trains and MTA/NJ Transit buses.
Week One: A&R (Artists and Repertoire) – Moderator: John McCracken Guest Speaker: Jason Jordan (former VP of A&R for Hollywood Records/Breaking Benjamin/Grace Potter, Plain White T's etc.)
What exactly do A&R people actually do from both traditional and current view points? Why are they still so important to my career? What do they look for? What is a 360 deal and what does it really mean for me? Indy vs. major vs. DIY---which one to choose and why? How do I get a demo into their hands? What should the demo have on it? Do's and don'ts when approaching A&R heads. How and what to do for an A&R showcase.
