Description
In Automating Inequality, Virginia Eubanks explains that while technology is often touted by policymakers as a way to better deliver services to the poor, existing systemic biases are often encoded into new data-driven programs, heightening inequitable outcomes the programs are meant to address. Automating Inequality is short, gripping and very readable -- perfect for the beach!
On August 23rd we'll have a conversation with the author about her work, and will also be joined by Code for America Engineering Lead, Christa Hartsock, to discuss how Code for America addresses these challenges as they seek to bring digital methods to government service delivery.
We recommend picking up the book from your favorite local bookstore like Laurel Bookstore in Oakland or Dog Eared Books in San Francisco. Sign up for our book club for more updates on our favorite reads.
You don't need to have read the book to join us for this event. If you're looking for a brief primer on the topic before the event, we recommend:
- This short audio piece on the book from NPR
- A great overview of algorithmic bias from FiveThirtyEight
We'll also be livestreaming the discussion for those that can't join us in person at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kO6fa1mfiLI. Light snacks and drinks will be served.
