THE HONOLULU POLICE DEPARTMENT & AUTISM COMMUNITY PARTNERS PRESENTS:
Autism: Police and Families as Partners

All families of children with special needs are welcome so children can become more familiar with local police. This safety education is in collaboration with the Honolulu Police Department, Autism Society of Hawaii, Hawaii Autism Foundation, Hawaii Association for Behavior Analysis (HABA) and ABC Group. Cafeteria space provided by the Department of Education.

Goal

"Autism: Police and Families as Partners" is a way for children with special needs to get familiar with police in each of the 8 HPD districts. This is being done in collaboration with DOE schools in those respective districts who are graciously allowing us to use their facilities (the cafeteria) on the weekend.

Topics

There will be a topic of focus (a different topic in each district i.e. elopement/ wandering, bullying etc.) and professionals/parents can share their experience with the police and vice versa in an informal environment. A professional from ABC Group will lead a guided conversation. Literature will be provided for parents and police. Parents can go to the event in their district and/or attend all the events in each of the 8 districts.

Keiki ID

A Keiki ID kit is a preventative tool to help recover missing children. It includes spaces for a child’s fingerprints, photo, dental chart (for a dentist to fill in), and a DNA sample (a strand of hair from the child’s hairbrush). Remember to update your keiki’s photo yearly due to changes to physical characteristics as they grow. Please keep this kit in a safe place at home. If your child ever goes missing, this kit should be given to law enforcement immediately. We will email a Keiki ID form that must be filled out PRIOR to coming. Please fill a form for EACH child needing an ID. The form can also be downloaded here: ag.hawaii.gov/cpja/files/2013/01/Keiki-ID-Trifolds_prt.pdf

Families who can’t make it to the Keiki ID Event at Shriners in town, we will end the series with another Keiki ID event at Makakilo Elementary. For further information on Keiki ID, visit: ag.hawaii.gov/cpja/mcch/keiki-id-kit or call (808) 586-1449.
