Autism Family Field Trip: A Water Taxi Adventure!

Take a moment to slow down, sit back and connect with each other and our local waterways on this autism family field trip adventure!
What does this Autism Family Field Trip include?
- An autism friendly environment, where everyone is welcome, and interactions are supported.
- A 2-hour round trip water taxi ride to Hollywood and back, narrated by a water taxi tour guide.
- Live and interactive music will be on board, featuring Sarah Galvan, music therapist with The Bows and Ties.
- A social story (with real pictures) will be sent prior to the trip to prepare all children for this adventure.
- Sensory supports will be available on board if needed.
- Post excursion resources and enrichment activities will be sent to all families after the trip, offering a fun way for families to reflect on the experience and to check for comprehension.

Tour Route:
At 9:00 sharp our water taxi adventure will begin as we set sail south on the Intracoastal Waterway, passing the ocean inlet, the fascinating Port Everglades, and the beautiful mangroves surrounding the intracoastal waterway we are traveling on! At 9:45 we will dock at Margaritaville Hollywood Beach Resort's 5 O’clock Somewhere Bar & Grill for approximately 15 minutes. The boat will then head back to the 17th Street Causeway.
Questions and Answers:
Q: What should I bring? A: Consider bringing: sun screen, a hat or visor, sunglasses, rubber soul shoes (sneakers suggested). You are welcome to bring light snacks for your family. (The boat has an area where you can purchase water, soft drinks, or juice). Any sensory supports that you know your child would benefit from are welcome on board as well.
Q: The tour begins at 9:00, so what time should I be there? A: The boat will be leaving 17thStreet at 9:00. It is suggested that you arrive by 8:30 to ensure that you don’t miss the boat.
Q: What is the parking situation? A: There is a covered, metered parking lot directly next to the water taxi stop.
Q: Is there a bathroom on the boat? A: Yes. There is a bathroom on the bottom floor of the boat.
Q: What happens if it rains? A: The water taxi will go on rain or shine. The boat has a covered area on top of the boat as well as a downstairs area that is fully covered and air conditioned.
Q: Can our family get off the boat at Margaritaville and take another water taxi boat home? A: Not as part of this package. If anyone would like get off at Margaritaville, explore, and take another boat back, a regular ‘hop on/hop off’ water taxi ticket can be purchased from Water Taxi directly for $28.00 per person.
Q: As a parent, what is my responsibility on this fun family field trip? A: One week prior to the date of our departure, all families will be sent a consent form and liability waiver to sign, acknowledging that you will be responsible for your child while on the boat. You may sign and return these electronically or bring a signed hard copy the day of the excursion. Hard copies will additionally be available on board. Please note:Signed consent forms must be completed and collected prior to departure.
Q: What about gratuity for the Water Taxi? A: Gratuity is optional but appreciated by the Water Taxi Captain and staff. $5 per family is recommended.

Dr. Jennie and Paola Espitia
Jennie Trocchio, Ph.D., is an autism educator and consultant with extensive experience creating and implementing educational programs for individuals with autism. Dr. Jennie has worked in both public and private educational settings. She is an advanced DIR/Floortime provider, a PLAY Project consultant, and certified in K-12 special education with endorsements in the areas of autism, reading, and ESOL. She earned her BS and MS from the University of Miami in Special Education, and her Ph.D. from Barry University in Leadership and Special Education with a focus in autism.
In the fall of 2014, Dr. Jennie founded Autism Education and Development Solutions. Guided by the DIR/Floortime model, she believes in building on potential and passions over deficits, in using meaningful experiences to foster development, and that strong relationships provide the foundation for all learning to occur. Paola Espitia is a Colombian-American marine biologist, communicator, photographer, and budding change agent who believes in making an impact that matters. Her mission is to connect people to the ocean and inspire an ocean-minded society through meaningful communications and transformative experiences on water. In 2013, she earned a Masters of Science in Marine Biology and Coastal Zone Management from the Halmos College of Natural Sciences and Oceanography at Nova Southeastern University. While Paola's work has led her around the world (studying corals in the Bahamas and South Florida, photographing whale sharks in Mexico, engaging in marine science outreach in California, Baja California, Cuba, Belize, Panama and more), sharing the beauty and importance of Florida's waterways is her way of inspiring local action. Today, she leads Blue Discovery Eco Tours on hybrid boats and kayaks, runs a communications and design consultancy with her partner called Ola’pi Creative, produces and hosts the Conversations by Water video series that profiles Wavemakers affecting change and speaks to professional groups, organizations, and schools about the benefits of a connection to water.
