Event description
Joshua Coombes is coming to Manny's to discuss his new book and the #Dosomethingfornothing movement that has spread all over the world.

About this event

About the Book & Author:

In 2015, while working at a London hair salon, Joshua Coombes took to the streets with his scissors to build relationships and offer haircuts to men and women experiencing homelessness in the capital. He began posting transformative images on social media to amplify the voices of those he met. The stories that accompanied these photos resonated, and others began to get involved in their own way. #DoSomethingForNothing was born—a movement that encourages people to connect their skills and time to those who need them.

This mission caught the attention of media outlets in Europe and has rippled worldwide. Coverage includes appearing in National Geographic’s new series The Story of Us with Morgan Freeman, released on Netflix internationally. Today, Coombes continues his efforts, working on the streets in new countries, humanizing the issue of homelessness globally.

Do Something For Nothing is not a charity, it's a grassroots movement that focuses on the individual, and how we can all play a part to positively affect the lives of those around us. Some issues in this world require donations and financial aid, but others are greatly improved by our sharing time.

Our collective mental health is intertwined. Therefore, the importance of being present and simply listening to the person in front of us can never be overlooked.

Across the world, people have joined in with Do Something For Nothing as a way to express their humanity; yoga instructors volunteering in rehabilitation centers, students spending time to have lunch with senior citizens who don’t have a family to visit them, neighbours helping one another with their shopping bags.

We all need a reminder of our common humanity and we believe in sharing these moments to inspire others.

Through the simple act of a haircut, readers are taken on a geographical and emotional journey into the lives of humans experiencing homelessness in different cities across the globe. Do Something for Nothing explores themes of love, acceptance, shame, and perseverance, while inviting us to see ourselves in one another and dissolve the negative stigmas surrounding homelessness.

About the Event:

The structure of this event will entail a short reading, about 45 minutes of discussion and Q&A with the author, and a short film screening. We hope to help solicit a more collaborative discussion and hear the diverse stories in our city.
