Event description

Description

Michael Glover, Sheffield-born poet and art critic, first became enthralled by the idea of John Ruskin when he was a small boy from Fir Vale who would travel up to the Mappin Art Gallery to stare and stare at Ruskin’s wonderful painting of a peacock’s tail feather. How had the painter conjured it, so minutely perfect in all its unearthly blueness, into life?

Decades on, Michael will be talking this evening about his new Ruskin Dictionary, which is published this month to coincide with the bi-centenary of Ruskin’s birth.

Who was this extraordinary man Ruskin? Michael’s delightful A-Z playfully distils the essence of one of the giants of the Victorian era who created a museum for the workers of Sheffield.
