Event description

Description

Jimmy Carter served as President of the United States from 1977 to 1981. During those tumultuous years, President Carter negotiated the Camp David Accords, which brought the first peace between Israel and Egypt; made human rights the central feature of his foreign policy applying both to military dictatorships in Latin America and to the Soviet Union; negotiated the Panama Canal Treaty and the SALT II nuclear arms reduction treaty; normalized relations with China; and began the military buildup after Vietnam to counter the Soviet military buildup, and took a tough stand against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. The Iranian Revolution and Iranian hostage crisis applied the coup de grace to the President's chances for reelection, together with high inflation. Ambassador Stuart Eizenstat presents his comprehensive view of the Carter Administration based upon more than 5000 pages of contemporaneous notes, more than 350 interviews, and scores of now declassified documents.

Join the World Affairs Council-Washington, DC and the American Academy of Diplomacy as we host Ambassador Stuart E. Eizenstat, author of “President Carter: The White House Years”, to discuss the Carter presidency. Ambassador Eizenstat was the chief White House domestic policy adviser to President Jimmy Carter from 1977-1981.

Ambassador Thomas Pickering, former US ambassador to the UN, will serve as discussant.
