Event description

Description

So many of us love to make jams and pickles during the summer season, but later in the year we look at our pantries and wonder, "what can I do with this?" Join cookbook author and food blogger Marisa McClellan at Read It & Eat on May 10th for a demo and conversation about canning, preserving, and all the delicious things you can do with a pantry full of jams, jellies, pickles, and chutneys.

Marisa has been writing and teaching about home canning for more than a decade, and with her newest book, The Food in Jars Kitchen, she is hoping to inspire people to think beyond toast and sandwiches when it comes to homemade preserves. While each recipe in The Food in Jars Kitchen calls for preserved ingredients, it does not limit the reader to McClellan’s previous recipes. Readers can use jams from specialty shops or those gifted by crafty friends and relatives; pickles from the hip artisanal purveyor down the block; chutneys from global food emporiums; and unsweetened applesauce and fruit butters picked up at the local farmer’s market for any of the recipes.

McClellan’s expertise is on display on every page, always painting the preserves as the star ingredient. Join us as she shares her knowledge, as well as a demo of 2-3 of her recipes!

About The Author:

Marisa McClellan grew up in Oregon, where she learned to can local blueberries, blackberries, and apples from her mother. A move across the country came between her and her canning pot, but a fortuitous blueberry picking expedition with a friend in 2006 reawakened her passion, and she has been canning and preserving in Philadelphia ever since. She started blogging about her canning adventures on Food in Jars in 2009, and since then, the site has become one of the Internet’s most popular and enduring canning blogs, selected as one of Saveur magazine’s “Sites We Love” and nominated three times for a Best Food Blog award. She is the author of Food in Jars: Preserving in Small Batches Year-Round (Running Press, 2012), Preserving by the Pint: Quick Seasonal Canning for Small Spaces (Running Press, 2014), and Naturally Sweet Food in Jars: 100 Preserves Made with Coconut, Maple, Honey, and More (Running Press, 2016), and has written for a number of publications, including Parents Magazine, Culture Magazine, Fine Cooking, AllRecipes, Serious Eats, The Kitchn, and Food52.
