Event description
Dr. Ian Hall of Griffith University will discuss the Australia-India strategic partnership in the Indo-Pacific.

About this Event

In barely a decade, Australia and India have constructed a strategic partnership from scratch, rapidly forging closer defense and security ties, and overcoming decades of mutual neglect and misunderstanding. Shared concerns about China's behavior and intentions towards the Indo-Pacific region have been the principal driver of change, moving Canberra and New Delhi to set aside or resolve past differences, and reticence about initiatives like the Quad. Challenges, however, loom, especially on the economic front. Australia and India have very different attitudes to cross-border trade and investment. Moreover, their strategic elites still frequently misinterpret each others' intentions and misunderstand each others' interests. In his talk, Dr. Ian Hall will discuss the rise of the strategic partnership and its various challenges, as Narendra Modi consolidates power in New Delhi and Scott Morrison's government wrestles with growing uncertainty about the Trump administration and Australia's vexed ties with China.

Ian Hall is a Professor of International Relations and the Deputy Director (Research) at the Griffith Asia Institute, Griffith University, Queensland, Australia. He is also an Academic Fellow of the Australia India Institute and the co-editor (with Sara E. Davies) of the Australian Journal of International Affairs. His research focuses on India's foreign relations, Indo-Pacific security, and the intellectual history of International Relations. His most recent book is Modi and the Reinvention of Indian Foreign Policy (2019).
