Summer Carnival 2019 Performers

Emman le Grand

Emman le Grand Born and raised in Kinshasa, DR Congo (Zaire), EMMAN LEGRAND lived in Belgium before coming to the United States. In many ways, EMMAN LEGRAND is a prototype World Beat artist, an heir to a varied culture background and wide ranging musical experience in Africa, Europe, and the United States. He freely combines various musical influences in his music, making him one of the most revolutionary musicians to come out the Ndombolo music scene.

EMMAN LEGRAND is intimately involved with the songwriting, arranging, and producing on his recordings. This is in marked contrast to the situation of many male vocalists in Africa who are often expected to follow the dictates of an outside producer. As a result, EMMAN LEGRAND is beginning a new revolution as a leading light of Congolese music. As a promoter, EMMAN LEGRAND contributes to the awareness of the sweet sound of African music in promoting various African music artists in Texas area. Starting from the late PePe Kalle, Soukous Stars band, Awilo Longomba, Koffi Olomide, Grace Decca, Douleur, Diblo Dibala, Kanda Bongo Man, Dany Engobo and the Coeur Brise Girls… 2008 projects included, JB Mpiana & Wenge BCBG USA tour, Awilo show in Houston. Emman's long waiting Mix Mode album coming in September 2010.

T-Rock is a Trinidadian Artist based in Houston, TX. The singer/songwriter’s claim to fame came in 2013 when his first groovy Soca release Hit & Run (Bouncin Bumper) became an instant hit for Trinidad Carnival and Worldwide. T-Rock Again continues to write and release his music gaining recognition all over the world while working with some of the biggest names in Soca production including 1st Klase, Precision Production, Millbeats, Platta and Nutation Records.

He has since performed in large and small concerts all over the Caribbean and North America along with some of the biggest names in Soca music including Machel Montano, Destra Garcia and Bunji Garlin just to name a few. Heading into the 2017, T-Rock is set to have one of his biggest years to date with the success of his 3 releases titled BEHIND DE TRUCK, LEH WE GO and his latest hit HUNTIN. The songs and videos have been shared and played on all the major radio and broadcast stations across the islands and well loved by the fans as displayed in some of his latest performance. Come journey with us and look forward to catch him live in a city near you.

Maracatu Texas

Maracatu Texas Maracatu Texas is the former Maracatu Austin. In the past, in the era of slavery in Brazil, the Maracatu groups crowned a black king and queen, who would be the communicators between the Portuguese slave owners and the black community to which they belonged. These traditions are still honored in these Maracatu groups today.

"Maracatu Texas" is intended to convey the rhythm of Maracatu, and also many other popular rhythms in the state of Pernambuco, such as the coco rhythms, the Brazilian Candomblé, frevo, ciranda, and many others. Since we are not a traditional group, Maracatu Texas also uses elements of world music in its arrangements.

The teacher and founder of the group, Bruno Vinezof, is a native of Pernambuco. Born in Olinda, where the traditional arts and culture are stronger than ever, Bruno has extensive experience with music. He has participated in ensembles performing Afoxé, maracatu, forró and coco, as well as in modern bands - always with the influences of his musical roots. He has played with artists such as: Rabecado, Azabumba, Quarteto Olinda, Renata Rosa, Cascabulho, Pandeiro do Mestre, Mestre Zé Neguinho do Coco, Spock Frevo, Maciel Salu, Alessandra Leão, Mestre Luiz Paixão, Quarteto Olinda, Claudio Rabeca and many others, including many masters of traditional music. He currently lives in Austin, TX and performs with Mente Clara and others.

Samba Saudade

Samba Saudade is a woman led Brazilian Samba group. We are professional samba dancers and trainers based in Austin, Texas and beyond. We help empower women through physical movement and sensual expression, within the cultural, political and historical framework of Brazilian samba.

‘Saudade’ is a Portuguese word that doesn’t have an exact English translation because the word evolved in a specific historical context during the colonial expansion of the Portuguese empire into Brazil. The word describes a deep nostalgia, a longing and a yearning for something, someone or somewhere.

Our name, Samba Saudade, represents a deep nostalgia, longing and yearning for the spirit of samba. Samba is always inside of us and we strive to bring it alive through music, dance and community.
