Event description

Description

The John Deere Planetarium at Augustana College will be presenting its annual holiday program on December 7th through 13th, 2019. The planetarium show will be offered Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. and weekday evenings at 7 p.m. Admission is free, but reservations are required and the program is not recommended for children ages seven and under.

Our holiday show, Season of Light, created by Loch Ness Productions, uses images, video, animation and sound to tell the story of how our holiday traditions are connected to the sky above. December is the darkest month of the year and people all over the world have held festivals, lit candles and tried to bring light to the darkness of the winter sky. Season of Light also explains the seasons, the winter constellations and speculates about the Star of Bethlehem.

Leading the show will be Augustana’s Planetarium Director, Dr. Lee Carkner. Just outside the planetarium, full-color images from the Hubble Space Telescope and a quarter ton piece of the Canyon Diablo meteorite will be displayed with interpretive information in the Getz-Rogers Gallery.

In addition, Augustana’s Fryxell Geology Museum, just adjacent to the planetarium, will be open for visitors the weekend of Dec. 7-8 from 1-4 p.m. and from 7:30-8:30 p.m. on the weeknights of Dec. 9-13.

Reservations are required. Doors will open 15 minutes before each program. Late-comers will not be admitted.
