Event description

Description

Join us as we welcome Audrey Watters to campus to give her talk on “Education Technology Under Trump”. What happens to education technology under President Trump? Adoption of new technologies over the past few decades have enabled schools (and companies) to gather massive amounts of data on students and faculty alike. The promise, in part, of this data collection: better measurement, better outcomes. But the collection of data poses risks as well, and these risks seem much more pressing under the new administration. What do we know about students -- their immigration status, their religion, their sexual identity? What do we know about their intellectual, academic, and political preferences? What happens to academic freedom when data, surveillance, and algorithmic decision come to education? What might we learn from the history of technology and its use in political repression? How do we help all of us understand and respond to the risks that come with the new technologies we're adopting and the new administration we're facing?

The lecture is free but registration is required.
Location: Tyler Haynes Commons, Alice Haynes Room.
Parking:
details will be sent to you after registration.

Audrey Watters is an education technology writer, independent scholar and prolific researcher.
