Event description

Description

Please join us for a film screening of Audre Lorde: The Berlin Years 1984-1992. This screening is a fundraiser for the Bay Area Lesbian Archives. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the film's producer and director, Dagmar Schultz and co-writer Ika Hugel-Marshall.

Audre Lorde: The Berlin Years 1984-1992 chronicles an untold chapter in Lorde’s life -- her empowerment of the Afro-German community, which resulted in their embracing of their African heritage and documentation of their histories and stories. As a result an anthology, Showing Our Colors: Afro German Women Speak Out was published along with the works of authors such as May Ayim, Katharina Oguntove, and Ika Hugel-Marshall. Lorde challenged German white women to acknowledge the significance and impact of their white privilege. The film documents Lorde’s contributions to the discourse on racism, xenophobia, antisemitism, classism, and homophobia within the German women’s movement. That discourse is alive today and still growing. The interviews explore the lasting influence of Lorde’s ideas and the impact of her work and personality. For the first time, Dagmar Schultz’s archival video- and audio recordings and footage are being made available to the public.
