A Service Jam? What’s that?
Each year round February/March, people who are interested in service and using a design-based approach to problem solving and creativity will meet all over the globe. In a spirit of experimentation, co-operation and friendly competition, teams will have 48 hours to develop brand new services inspired by a shared theme. On Sunday at 3pm (local time), they publish them to the world.
Is the Jam only for designers?
No. Anyone can take part. You just need to be interested in services or creativity, and have an open, enquiring mind.
You might be a service designer, an academic, a customer, a student, a customer experience person, a UX ninja, a patient, someone in the customer frontline, unemployed, an actor, an artist, a doctor, a grandpa or a kid.
But why should I participate?
As a participant in the Global service jam, you will work through a whole design process in one weekend. Whether you are experienced or completely new to the field, you won't just be talking about service design, you will be working with others on developing concrete ideas and designs which could become real.
- You will learn more about a design-based approach to problems, and about sustainability.
- You will pick up a load of new ideas and work practices.
- You will meet a lot of cool people at all levels of experience.
- Your work and ideas will be reviewed by your peers, and presented to the world, where they can be seen by potential customers or employers, or people who could make them real.
- You will design something that may become a real business.
- You might get rich and famous.
- You will certainly have a blast.
What can I expect if I attend?
A weekend-long workshop to develop new services; including brainstorming, researching, prototyping, and sharing.
After revealing the Jam’s secret theme on Friday night, we’ll break into teams and start working. The challenge is to identify and understand a real-world need, ideate and prototype concepts, and deliver a solution by Sunday afternoon.
This is a weekend for you to ask “Why?” like a kid, dream big, forget convention, and just make stuff.
Furthermore, you will:
Learn more about the service design-based approach to problems
Pick up a load of new ideas and work practices
Meet a bunch of cool people at all levels of experience
Share your work and ideas with your peers both locally and around the world
Have a blast!
What should I bring?
The workspace and basic office supplies will be supplied - but please bring anything else that you might want to work or prototype with and we can remind you Friday night.
Will I be fed?
Yes! We have included food in our ticket price because the Jam moves fast and we want to keep distractions low and energy high! If you have food allergies or dietary restrictions, please let us know in our registration form once purchase your ticket to the Jam.
What if I can only attend one day of the Jam?
The 2017 Jam runs from Friday evening on the 17th to Sunday the 19th, and largely your time is spent in teams. To be fair to your future teammates and to ensure the best possible experience for you, please plan to attend every day of the event. We understand that people have other obligations, such as family and work, so arriving a bit late/leaving a bit early, or stepping out for a few hours, is ok.
