Event Details

Join us for a day of professional development, camaraderie, and fellowship at the Hawaii Council of Teachers of Mathematics' annual conference!  Find out about the Common Core State Standards along with strategies for instruction and assessment and ideas for new activities, incorporating technology, and enhancing student understanding.

Keynote speaker:  Dr. Barbara Dougherty      12 Math Rules that Expire!

Dr. Barbara Dougherty is currently the Director of the Curriculum Research & Development Group at the University of Hawai‘i, Mānoa. Previously the Director of the Center for Excellence in Science, Mathematics & Engineering Education at Iowa State University, Dr. Dougherty is a distinguished national leader of mathematics education and specializes in mathematics instruction with struggling learners.   Dr. Doughertyʻs most recent work includes the development of screening and progress monitoring tools for algebra and the development of intervention modules to prepare  students for algebra experiences.  

  This year's conference will feature several presentation formats:

  • Opening keynote session 
  • Three one-hour workshops (topics for grades K - 12)
  • Poster displays and mini-sessions featuring Hawaii teachers showcasing their student work for a particular project, activity or assignment
  • Exhibitors
  • Door prizes in Wrap-up Session

Hawaii Council of Teachers of Mathematics

The purposes of this organization shall be: (1) To provide teachers with opportunities for the exchange of ideas and materials regarding instruction in mathematics; (2) to further the cooperative study of ideas relating to the teaching of mathematics at the elementary, secondary, and college levels; (3) to foster more effective mathematics teaching at all levels of instruction in the schools of Hawaii by offering meetings and workshops of the types not available through other organizations and institutions in Hawaii; (4) to provide a medium for liaison with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
