Genealogy in the Digital Age

Today’s genealogists have access to a growing number of digital genealogical sources that include original records, newspapers, books and more. Digital repositories not only include subscription websites, but also public libraries, archives, universities and societies. Come explore a sampling of these repositories and sources with us, along with getting to know about our society’s Special Interest Groups. Don't forget to bring some cash for visiting vendors! Curious? Nostalgic? Come out and meet new friends who share your interests! Your ticket to the fair also includes lunch. We look forward to seeing you there!

If you are a member, don’t forget to check out the discount code in the members only section of the FxGS webpage.

Schedule of events:

9:00 a.m.: Welcome Remarks by Fairfax Genealogical Society

9:30 - 10:30 a.m.: By the Book: Digital Databases Bringing Libraries to Your Desktop

Projects such as Family History Books, Google Books and Germany-based DigiBib have been keeping digital scanners busy as many titles from some of the nation's largest libraries have "gone electronic," allowing users anywhere access to publications from around the globe. Learn about these ambitious "virtual libraries" and how to harness them for genealogy.

11:00 a.m.-12:00 noon:
An “Average” Ancestor Seen through Newspapers

The country song says “everyone dies famous in a small town” but until close to our present day, you can expect to find a fair number of other references to even your most ordinary ancestors if you make your goal to use all of the potential newspapers for a particular time period.

12:00 noon-1:00 p.m.:
Lunch (included-make your selection when registering)

1:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m.: Headlines to Bylines: Using All the Newspaper in your Genealogy

Everyone turns to newspapers to find obituaries of their ancestors but every section and column of historical newspapers can be valuable in your genealogical search. Learn how news briefs, advertisements, even editorials and “letters to the editor” might add to your store of knowledge about your ancestors and their lives in context.
