Event description

Description

The conversation we often hear about young people and mental health is one of brokenness and powerlessness. It’s time for a new story around mental health, one that’s empowering, transformative, and healing.

Introducing The Lighthouse Curriculum: Depression and Suicide Awareness for High School Students, is a series of three 45-minute lessons, video-based high school classroom curriculum that seeks to open up conversations about mental health, provide students with opportunities to better understand what it’s like to have depression, and inform students of where they can get help if worried about themselves or a friend. The lessons also seek to teach students real tools that reduce stress and support well-being. These are tools that any high school student - whether or not they have depression - can easily implement into their own life and carry with them throughout their high school career and beyond. Schools can also tailor to the curriculum to their own needs and choose to teach either one, two, or three of the 45-minute lessons.

What makes The Lighthouse Curriculum unique?

  • Trains teachers how to have safe, open conversations around mental health in their classroom

  • Features a brand new 20-minute video that:

    • Covers all of the key concepts related to depression and suicide awareness

    • Features 7 diverse young people sharing their own personal stories

    • Provides a jumping off point for further discussion and activities

  • Provides opportunities for students to engage in interactive, experiential, critical thinking activities around the topic of depression and mental health:

    • Small group work activities designed to reduce stigma around depression by increasing students’ empathy and compassion for young people experiencing depression and helping them see the resiliency in people’s stories

    • An experiential guided exercise on our website led by Erika’s Lighthouse staff that you can play for your students that will guide them through different tools that every student can apply to their own lives to reduce stress and improve well-being

What if our school is already teaching a depression and suicide awareness program?

The Lighthouse Curriculum is an excellent addition to all the great work you’re already doing in your school around mental health. The Lighthouse Curriculum is very different than a textbook or a curriculum whose primary purpose is to convey basic facts and information. Our curriculum takes the content to the next level by giving students opportunity to delve deeper into the topic with critical thinking exercises, small group work, and experiential activities.

What key information do I need to know if our school wants to implement this curriculum for the 2016-2017 school year?

The Lighthouse Curriculum will launch in August 2017. Peggy Kubert, Director of Education and Programming, will lead several trainings - both via webinar and in person in different Chicago suburbs. For additional information, please contact Peggy at peggy@erikaslighthouse.org or 847-386-6481 x103.
