Attachment Implications in the Treatment of Addiction, Betrayal and Relational Trauma

Jim Thomas, LMFT

This workshop integrates the growing body of research on attachment-based therapies,

specifically E.F.T.(Emotionally Focused Therapy), into work with three of the most pernicious, difficult presenting problems in couples (and individual therapy).  We will explore the commonality between addiction, affairs and relational trauma histories in couples therapy.  In doing so, participants will learn:

1) How an attachment-lens changes engagement in couple’s therapy with couples facing any of these presenting problems.

2) Ways to integrate the attachment-lens early in treatment using the E.F.T. approach.

3) Why the attachment-frame builds hope and reframes these core issues into opportunities for couples and families.

Video clips of the presenter’s work will be shown.   Join us for a day of exploration into the significant implications of attachment theory in addressing addiction, betrayal and relational trauma in couple’s therapy and beyond.

Jim Thomas, LMFT, has over 26 years of clinical and supervisory experience. He has worked with difficult and diverse populations from at-risk youth and families in inner city Denver, to couples struggling at the Denver Family Institute, as well as couples in his private practice.    An ICEEFT Certified EFT Trainer, Director Emeritus, Denver Family Institute, he is currently the Executive Director, Colorado Center for Emotionally Focused Therapy.
