Have an app idea or need an app built for your business?

Mobile App Hackathon is an event produced by the AT&T Developer Program  that is designed for attendees (technical & non-technical) to build apps/mobile apps, get fed, compete for prizes across different categories and most importantly: meet new people and scout for teammates to work on new or current projects. This hackathon will introduce you to the latest cutting edge tools to help deploy your own app with a website backend, fully hosted in the cloud.

We Supply: Onsite, we will provide devices from SensorCon, Wahoo, Plantronics, and Neurosky that you can string together for a more integrated view into your world. You can also build wearables from scratch with Arduino boards, Arduino Lilypad boards, or ARM/Freescale mbed boards, then push your data into AT&T's M2X time-series data storage service for the Internet of Things. Invite your robot crazy friends, maker friends and DIY enthusiasts out to a weekend of making your world. Technical senseis will also be on site to assist you in building faster, smarter, and with new tools.

You Bring: Your laptop, skills & ideas. Come with a collaborative, team focused mindset and/or team up in advance on Twitter/Facebook/Google+ via the #atthack hashtag. Whether you are a backend person and code in Ruby/PHP/.NET or are a designer and only work with Illustrator, you are invited to attend this event. Every group needs a good balance of talent and your development skills are needed!


Hackathon Event Schedule.  The following is a list of the weekends agenda:

  • February 7th
    • 6PM - Kickoff event with dinner, networking, and developer dating which leads into idea pitches and team formation.
    • 7:00PM - Lightning talks.
    • 8:00PM - Idea pitches and team formation. Pitch your ideas and form teams or just start coding with your preformed teams.
    • 12AM - Keep going! Facilities are open all night!
  • February 8th
    • 10AM - The challenge concludes with the final day of the hackathon. Finish the apps you've been working on all weekend and prepare to present your work. App submissions will be accepted throughout the day with a deadline of 6PM.
    • 1PM - Lunch
    • 6PM - Pencils down. Please sign up your teams to present via this link: http://bit.ly/hackprezreg Pitches start promptly at 6PM and are limited to three (3) minutes per team. No powerpoints unless you are only presenting an idea.

Prizes. The following prizes are experiential and geared towards accelerating you towards a successful business as well as expanding your network and industry knowledge:

  • Best Wearables App - Create anything you want!
    • 1st Place - $500 in Gift Cards for the team to split
  • Best M2M App - Must use http://m2x.att.com/
    • 1st Place - $500 in Gift Cards for the team to split
  • Best AT&T API Tutorial - Tutorial must be posted to Github.com
    • 1st Place - $500 in Gift Cards for the team to split
  • Most Incubatable Idea - NestGSV
    • 1st Place - Desk space at NestGSV!
  • Best Neurosky App 
    • 1st Place - MindWave Mobile BT headsets for the team
  • Best Plantronics App
    • 1st Place - $500 in Gift Cards for the team to split
  • Best LOB App
    • 1st Place - Lob.com Credits & More!

Judging Criteria. Apps will be judged based on the criteria below and weighted accordingly.  

  • 33% Weight - Ability to clearly articulate what your app does
  • 33% Weight - Originality of idea
  • 33% Weight - Technical creativity

Greg Rose
Alex Donn, Senior Marketing Manager at AT&T, is based out of sunny Seattle! His passion is educating developers young and old about mobile application development best practices through events like hackathons that fuse the collective interests of multiple technology and business leaders. He loves bacon and is allergic to all types of gluten. Greg Rose Greg has been working in Developer Relations since 2008 and is the Community Manager for both PLT LABS (pltlabs.com) and the Plantronics Developer Connection (developer.plantronics.com). As Community Manager, he is an advocate for developers who wish to get access to Plantronics hardware and software tools to build apps that run on Plantronics headsets. Greg tweets from @pltlabs and @PlantronicsDev and has been known to write various blog posts as well as create a YouTube video or two.
Johnny Liu Lance Nanek
 Johnny Liu, as a part of NeuroSky's founding team, has been instrumental in NeuroSky's product and business development across the last 8 years. His projects, from early headset prototypes to Developer API's, have helped define today's consumer Brain-Computer Interface. As the Director of NeuroSky's Developer Program, Johnny collaborates with other innovators and hackers towards the next wave of applications. Lance Nanek is one of the programmers for Lock n Roll - a cross platform dice puzzle game with over 1 million downloads and available on iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7, and facebook. He has over 10 years of experience in IT - supporting other developers as part of HTCdev, working on hit apps like CardioTrainer at WorkSmart Labs, and working for big companies like IBM and State University of New York.


Colin Toomey

Ned Hogan

Colin Toomey is the user experience design manager at the AT&T Big Data division. Colin leads the UX team in creating viable products that don't just incorporate graphical interfaces but also natural user interfaces to display big data information and analytics. Colin has over 10 years of experience designing and building web and and mobile applications for organizations like Cisco, Genentech, ON24, and many more. Colin mentors startups and regularly teaches at various universities. You can follow him on Twitter at @cibit. Ned Hogan recently joined the Plantronics Mobile Application team and is looking forward to new adventures with the Plantronics SDK's and Wearables. He worked for many years at SCO where we were one of the 1st SYSV Unix'es on Intel. Ned has served two tours at Apple and has been an independent iOS developer the last couple of years and worked all kinds of Applications including a short tour at Toyota R&D in Mt View. His last project was an 18 month tour with BendixKing and the myWingManEFB aviation application and the 1st generation of external ADSB bluetooth and WiFi devices. I was one of the 1st to learn to fly with an iPad.

Gopal Anantharaman

Gopal Anantharaman is a Staff Software Engineer at Plantronics, working on UC Softphone plugins for Spokes platform. He has a background in Distributed Platforms development (Remember DCE RPC & CORBA) and Security. He has a passion for programming, Algorithms design and theory. Gopal has a Masters in Computer Science from Columbia University.
