Event description

Description

Combining an ancient method of clayworking with state-of-the-art electronics (circa 1977), this unique museum presents the teachings of the Bhagavad-gita through narration, movement, and visual effects.

Join us for a tour of the Bhagavad-gita Museum, located at the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) of Los Angeles. In a private visit arranged especially for Atlas Obscura Society Los Angeles, we'll explore the museum, temple, Ashram, and more as we learn all about the Hare Krishna religion and the history of this hidden cultural treasure.

The tour will begin with an introduction by the museum's director, Radha-Krishna Das. Then we will begin our journey through the museum dioramas. Capacity inside the museum is extremely limited. Because of space restrictions, we will enter in shifts (groups of 7). Afterward, we will walk across the street to the residential section “The Ashram.” We will visit two groups of apartments owned and operated by the ISKCON of L.A. and hear the history and significance of the Ashram. Lastly, we will head to the temple, where we will get to experience the gorgeous alter. There we will have time for Q&A.

During the time between groups entering the museum, we recommend grabbing a snack next door at Govinda's "karma-free vegan and vegetarian dining" and exploring the gift shop. Everyone on the tour is eligible for a coupon for a discounted ($5) buffet. Both close at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday though, so arrive by 3:30 p.m. if you care to check them out.

After the event, we welcome you to explore the "Snana Yatra" festival or the "Festival of Bathing," which is the prelude to the biggest festival of the year (Ratha Yatra, Festival of Chariots) of ISKCON-LA. The latter which will be held on August 5 in Venice Beach. The story goes that Jaganatha, the Lord of the Universe, gets a cold after taking a bath on Snana Yatra, and goes into seclusion for two weeks only to reappear on the Ratha Yatra day! The esoteric meaning of the procession is that Jaganatha hides from the vision of his devotees to stimulate the "love in separation" sentiment in them and reappears to bring about the "love in union." According to the great teachers of Bhakti yoga, the feelings of love in separation and in union intensify each other millions of times, but the ecstasies in separation always remain more intense and more glorified, so much so that Krishna's lovers would go through unbearable feelings of separation even when blinking their eyes.

There will be a free festival feast at 6:30 pm.
