ETHICS At Work and Positive: Ethics and employment rights for people with HIV, Viral Hepatitis & substance use disorders - 6 CEs

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), diagnoses of HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and substance abuse disorders require extensive physical and mental health care and counseling along with social services. It is imperative that mental health professionals continually update their skills and knowledge as well as reexamine their own attitudes and biases.

This course will explain the employment rights of people with HIV, viral hepatitis, and substance use disorders. It focuses on anti-discrimination laws, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, and how not only to protect the rights of individuals but also to counsel clients on how to engage in self-advocacy in addressing these issues.

Training Course Objectives:

• Describe what employers may ask about disabilities, including HIV status, Viral Hepatitis, and substance use disorders;
• Describe the basic workplace anti-discrimination protections for people with HIV, Viral Hepatitis and substance use disorders;
• Address the ethical considerations for mental health practitioners and legal remedies available to people who have experienced workplace discrimination; and
• Identify useful resources to help clients understand their employment rights and seek legal help when they believe their rights have been violated.
