AT THE CATCH: Educating, engaging, and empowering Masters Women across the globe

Please join us for the first annual Rowing Symposium for Masters Women.

This symposium will bring together masters women from across the Northeast region to learn and discuss topics specific to the masters woman rower, including training approaches, nutritional set points, and creating a positive and competitive club culture.

We look forward to seeing you on March 23rd!

Topics and Workshop Schedule:

  • 8:00-8:30am check-in

  • 8:30-8:45am Welcome, opening remarks, and introduction of presenters

  • 8:45-9:45am session 1 – Joints, Aging, and Rowing
    Rowing with a “bad” or new knee or hip, coming back from injury etc.
    Presenter: Dr. Tara Futrell CAQSM

  • 9:50-10:50am session 2 – Nutrition Essentials for Sport and Exercise
    Presenter: Tracy Roth, Certified Personal Trainer, https://yourhubstudio.com/

    This talk will cover the essentials of balanced nutrition for our general health and wellbeing, and how to apply this knowledge to strategies for Pre-, During-, and Post-Workout nutrition.

  • 11:00-12:00pm session 3 - Masters Women and Competitive Success: The “C” Word
    A discussion of competitive culture and how it can effect club success and membership retention.

  • 12:00–12:45pm lunch break – workshop provides lunch

  • 12:45-1:45 session 4 - Core Stability and Strength for Rowers
    Recommended rowing-specific exercise / training approaches as women age with the intention of remaining competitive

  • 1:50-3:00 session 5 - Your Athletic Brain - Mental Skills Training
    The skills necessary to develop a positive performance approach.

  • 3:05-4:05pm session 6 – Rowing Through Life Changes
    Dig deeper into why you row and how it can help you stay motivated to row when facing life changes such as marriage, building a career, raising a family, relocating, retiring, etc.
    Small group discussion facilitated by Vreni Hommes and Reba Knickerbocker M.S.

  • 4:05-4:30pm Closing remarks and symposium evaluation form.

    Speaker Bios:

  • Dr. Tara Futrell CAQSM earned her medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science in Houston. She completed her residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at Baystate Medical Center. She worked as a primary care physician for over eight years before pursuing a career in sports medicine. She completed her fellowship in sports medicine at the University of Massachusetts and is board certified.

    Dr. Futrell works with athletes and active people of all ages. She has been the team physician for multiple colleges including UMass Amherst, Holy Cross, WPI and Clark University. Dr. Futrell currently works with Smith and Mt. Holyoke athletes as well as several private boarding schools in the area. She is the medical director and head team physician for the AHL Springfield Thunderbirds.

  • Tracy Roth is the Owner of The Hub Studio in Florence, MA, a Group Fitness and Personal Training Studio specializing in Indoor and Outdoor Cycling, TRX, Barre, and much more. Tracy is a Certified Personal Trainer (NASM-CPT), L3 USA Cycling Coach, Group Fitness Instructor, Sports and Exercise Nutrition Coach (Pn L1), and Integrative Nutrition Health Coach with a diverse athletic background in mountain biking, road cycling, surfing, skiing, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, hiking, climbing, CrossFit and many other sports. As an Athlete, outdoor adventures and anything requiring physical endurance and mental resilience are her true passions.

  • Reba Knickerbocker M.S has been coaching in the rowing world since 1998. She was a collegiate coxswain as well as a masters rower and coxswain. She has coaching experience at the junior, collegiate, and masters levels. Currently she is a mindset coach for masters women and works with teams on developing competitive culture as well as mental training approaches for greater competitive success. She maintains a blog at www.bendtheblade.com

  • Vreni (“V”) Hommes CPCC, ACC is a womens master rower. She rowed at Notre Dame in the 1980s and now rows with the “Notre Dames” (her teammates from ND) and the Hudson River Rowing Association. Vreni is committed to supporting masters women who love rowing, training, competing AND are figuring out how to be their best “at this age”.

    When not on the water, Vreni provides executive coaching to people who are going through life or career transitions, ready to make transformational changes, or figuring out what their life purpose truly is. Vreni draws from her 20+ years as a management consultant specializing in behavior and culture change. (Vreni’s LinkedIn profile)
