At Home with Art

Spark the Imagination of Creative Kids!
Each day’s activities begin with a visit to the historic rooms of the museum to gather inspiration and learn about artistic techniques from the exceptional architecture and the extraordinary collection of paintings, pastels, sculpture, prints and ceramics inside. At home with Art uses Hill-Stead Museum as an expanded art studio.

Afterward, students will create their own works of art, experimenting hands-on while they work with the help of experienced educators. Geared for ages 6-11.

Week 1: Theodate’s World of Design

Geared for childrens ages 6-11

Hill-Stead’s founder, Theodate Pope Riddle, was the architect who designed the Colonial Revival home on the hill where her family lived. She designed the building and the rooms to house the amazing collections of fine and decorative arts that her family treasured. Following Theodate’s lead, participants will explore all kinds of design, including: home design and architecture, fashion, landscape architecture, graphic design, and textiles. By the end of the week, they will create plans for their own dream home!

Week Two: Decorative Arts at Home

Geared for children ages 6-11

Ancient Asian ceramics, intricately woven rugs and lace, beautifully bound books, porcelain vases and tea sets adorn Hill-Stead’s rooms. The Popes collected much more than paintings, and during this week, participants will discover the rest of their collections. Then they get try their hands at creating some sculpture, book arts, weaving and pottery.

Week Three: Printmaking

Geared for childrens ages 6-11

Through the centuries, people have been able to collect art and learn about it through prints and
etchings. Many of the Impressionist artists who painted pieces in Hill-Stead’s collection studied Japanese
printmaking for its fresh approach to composition. The Popes loved all kinds of prints and they collected
an amazing array of styles and subject matter. Students will learn more about Hill-Stead’s prints and will
practice various printing methods like monoprint, relief printing and Lino print to create copies of their
own original artwork.

Week Four: Book Arts

Geared for children ages 6-11

Participants will start out by stretching their imaginations by visiting Hill-Stead’s library, which has more than 3,300 books about poetry, novels, illustrated books, atlases and more. Then they will become an author and illustrator as they try different writing and illustrative techniques while creating their own book. Hill-Stead’s nature, art, and historical collections will fuel the students’ imagination as they produce their own literary adventures.

Week Five: Impressionist Art

Geared for children ages 6-11

During this final week of At Home with Arts, participants will have the chance to explore the world of Impressionist art with our museums extensive collection and learn the techniques used by the artists. Let your kids set their imagination free with bright colors and loose brush strokes to create their very own Impressionist art among the inspiration of some of the most famous artists such as Monet and Degas.
