Description

At Home in the World

At Home in the World is a performance which combines Ugandan dance, Japanese Taiko drumming and choral singing, orchestrated by internationally renowned director John Caird. The performers include the Ugandan Ashinaga Rainbow House children, the Japanese Ashinaga Rainbow House students and Vassar College Choir. At Home in the World saw successive tours in 2014 and 2015, which culminated with performances in New York, Washington and Tokyo.

Though its young performers grew up in contrasting cultures and environments, At Home in the World brings them together through their shared passion for the arts. This unique cultural collaboration aims to raise awareness for the Ashinaga African Initiative, which unites students from every Sub-Saharan African country.

The Ashinaga African Initiative

Ashinaga’s African Initiative provides ambitious orphaned, and bereaved, students from Sub- Saharan Africa with opportunities for higher education, at the world’s leading universities. The Initiative aims to nurture future leaders, by providing them with the necessary skills to contribute positive change to their respective communities. Ashinaga is proud to announce that scholars from 35 different Sub-Saharan African countries will join the programme in 2016.

John Caird

London based director and writer John Caird’s work spans plays, musicals and operas. As a director, he has won a Tony Award for Les Misérables and both a Tony and an Olivier Award for the ground-breaking production of Nicholas Nickleby.
