Notice from the Steering Committee (event details below)

Good afternoon Everyone,

The steering committee would like to say a warm thank you for your support over the years, and for your patience as we were on hiatus over the winter in 2017 after cancelling due to the snow storm, then scheduling conflicts.

We are very excited to be able to reach out to you all again and say that ACL is back for 2017/2018 season with a series of breakfast dates planned, and networking lunches to follow.

For 2017/2018 we've returned to our traditional venue at the Union Club of BC, and have a wonderful speaker lined up for October 17th, Mike Smyth, Political Columnist, for The Province. Please see details below, and register at your earliest convenience. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Warm regards,

ACL Steering Committee

Keynote Speaker: Mike Smyth, Columnist, Vancouver Province

Topic – B.C.'s Political Roller-Coaster Ride

The May 9 provincial election was the closest in B.C. history. It took two nail-biting weeks to officially confirm the razor-close results with the final count in Courtenay-Comox dashing Christy Clark's hope of hanging on to majority power.

Then, on June 29, the NDP and B.C. Green parties defeated the Liberals on a historic non-confidence vote in the legislature, ending 16 years of Liberal government. NDP leader John Horgan became premier, with a minority government supported by Andrew Weaver's Green Party.

Mike Smyth, long-time columnist for The Vancouver Province newspaper, will speak to us about this year in B.C. politics and where the new NDP government is planning to take the province.

Mike’s Biography

Mike Smyth is one of British Columbia's most popular political commentators and has prowled the halls of the B.C. legislature for more than 20 years.

Before arriving in Victoria, Mike worked for The Canadian Press in Toronto, and several newspapers in southern Ontario. He studied political science at the University of Toronto and journalism at Ryerson University.

Mike began in Victoria as a correspondent for The Canadian Press, Canada's national news agency. He then joined The Province as the newspaper’s political columnist in Victoria, a post he has held for 20 years.

He has been a regular on radio and television, and was host of The Mike Smyth Show and Nightline B.C. on CKNW radio for many years and the host of This Week in B.C. on Shaw Cable television. He is now a part-time talk-show host at CKNW.

Mike was raised in a faithful Catholic home by his Irish parents, and lives in Victoria with his wife Mary Griffin, a reporter at CKEK-TV in Victoria, and their two sons, Declan and Seamus.
