Weld Failures: Small errors.... big problems
Presented by Matthew Bell, P.Eng.
Registration 6:00 PM
Dinner 6:30 PM
Program 7:30 PM
Welding can be a routine activity in many workplaces. However, small errors made early in the process can lead to big problems in service. Sometimes solving one problem can introduce other problems. Design considerations, service considerations, weld preparation, and operation in service are all key factors. The presentation will introduce a few illustrative failures about how overlooking small details resulted in unreliable welds.
Matthew Bell, P.Eng. has a Bachelor’s of Science in Materials Engineering from the University of Alberta (2007). He has been registered as a Professional Engineer in Alberta since 2011. His experience through the U of A Co-Op program exposed him to various industries including: testing fibreglass materials (ZCL Composites, Inc.), researching bitumen hydrotransport (University of Alberta, Undergraduate NSERC Award), and a co-op position that transitioned into his first job after graduation providing materials engineering plant support (Suncor Energy, Upgrading).
Since mid-2010 he has been employed with IRISNDT providing services in failure analysis for a wide range of materials and industries. He is wrapping up his last term as the Treasurer for the ASM International - Edmonton Chapter and recently gave the penultimate lesson for ASM Edmonton’s course on “Metallurgy for the Non Metallurgist” to local industry personnel. In what is left of his spare time, he is also completing an M.Eng. at the University of Alberta; he is anticipating some relaxation in mid-2018.
