TITLE: Materials and music: The science and art of musical instruments

BIO: Dr. Jim Cotton is a local materials scientist who has worked at Boeing for 24 years in various research and production support capacities. Prior to Boeing he worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, NASA and Kaiser Aluminum. Jim is also a local singer-songwriter who has recorded in Nashville

ABSTRACT: Jim will blend his interests in materials and music by discussing the history and basic principles of materials selection for instrument construction, material properties relevant to music (sound speed, resonance, acoustics, durability, affordability), how the brain interprets music, and elements of music theory. He will follow up by playing a combination of original compositions and Christmas songs on guitar, ukulele, mandolin and harmonica. If you’d like a preview, some of Jim’s original songs are available on-line at: http://jamesdeancotton.bandcamp.com. He plays at local coffeehouses about once a month in the Puget Sound area.
