Event description

Description

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Course Dates are Tuesdays, September 17 - November 19, 2019.

Eligibility: this course is open to ages 16+

This 10-week course is fifth in the series of American Sign Language classes. In our daily lives, we find reason to discuss rules. The can be “rules we live by” such as driving, social rules, cultural rules, or school rules; or there are “rules we play by” such as rules for party games, card games. Students learn to give clear instructions or explanations using classifiers and conditional sentences, rhetorical questions and relative clauses along with “rule” related vocabulary as well as appropriate attention getting during activities.

We also have a story to tell about our misadventures – childhood incidents involving a horse or bicycle; adult incidents involving car accidents or even near misses. Sharing our personal experiences with other people is often entertaining, enlightening and even instructional. It can help others to make better decisions the next time they encounter a similar situation.

Students continue to develop essential skills for telling a story successfully and switching effortlessly between classifiers representing real world and/or abstract frames. Reactions to incidents coincide with actions and role shift perspectives.

Pre-requisite:

Successful completion of ASL104 or recommendation by way of a placement test.

A “no-voice” teaching method is used to reinforce the learning experience. You'll learn through classroom instruction and role-play, as well as videotext and a workbook. The videotext and workbook supplement and reinforce the classroom instruction so you can review, practice and retain what you learn.

Our qualified Deaf instructors use Signing Naturally, a sign language curriculum that teaches both ASL and Deaf culture to help you better understand the communication needs of the Deaf community.

Note: no class on April 20, 2019 and May 18, 2019
