Event description

Description

There’s good news about the climate crisis every day—advances on solutions as well as growing awareness and political commitment—but the fundamental physical news is almost always bad. Climate impacts are worsening faster than predicted. A new book by top experts has just come out on this under-estimation bias: here’s the author's summary in Scientific American.

What is it like to be a climate scientist directly confronting these stark realities every day in your work? What lessons about resilience—and courage—can we draw from the practice of climate science? What connections can we make across disciplines and other boundaries to help us face the climate crisis?

Join Dr. Sonali McDermid to explore these questions and others on the social and psychological context for climate science. We will also hear her assessment of where climate science is advancing fastest and where it needs to catch up to what is happening in our world today.

Dr. McDermid teaches Environmental Studies at NYU, holds a PhD in Atmospheric Science and Climatology from Columbia University, and was a NASA Post-Doctoral researcher at the Goddard Institute for Space Studies. She is a contributing author to the UN’s upcoming Land Report and an established expert on climate change and food security, among other subjects.

Space is limited for the 2:00pm - 3:30pm talk. RSVP required.

Dr. Sonali McDermid will also remain at the exhibition from 3:45pm - 6:00pm to field questions from the public.
