Description
Soy flour paste knowledge has been passed down since Tang and Song Dynasties in China and been commonly practiced in Korea. This is a similar process as Katazome which is a Japanese resist dyeing using rice paste. However, soy flour paste requires shorter steps to make and easier to apply on fabrics to make patterns. This class is from 10-3 with a one hour lunch break included.
10:00am - 12:00pm Introduction to Indigo + Soy Flour Paste
- A brief introduction about Polygonum tinctorium and background stories of each ingredient. 1) How to make and maintain natural henna indigo vat 2) How to make soy flour paste for resist print 3) How to apply/make patterns on fabric with the soy flour paste 4) Studio time!
12:00pm - 1:00pm Lunch Break
1:00pm - 3:00pm Experimental Dye Time
- Students will have an experimental indigo dye time with materials and techniques learned from the first session.
OPTIONAL: Additional dye time, Sunday, March 8 from 12:00pm - 2:00pm
- You are invited to return to Neighborhood Fiber Company for an open kitchen dye day on March 8 from 12:00pm - 2:00pm. Two indigo vats with a shibori kit (5”x5” cut fabric with threads) will be available for your use.
